MSA Supports Boston Marathon Team MR8For years, the Boston Marathon has held such a prestigious honor for runners from around the world. It was for some, a once in a lifetime chance and for others, a life long passion. April 15, 2013 marked the 117th Boston Marathon, the world's oldest annual running event. The day was beautiful – sunny, without a cloud in sight; that is until approximately 2:49 pm when two bombs went off near the finish line. The blasts instantly created a day of horror and fear as people scrambled for their lives and the lives of others. Three spectators died: a 23-year-old woman, a 29-year-old woman and an 8-year-old boy, while more than 260 others were wounded. Sixteen people lost legs; the youngest amputee was a 7-year-old girl.
Benjamin Zachary, President of Alexander Railroad Company, Inc. in Taylorsville, NC, will be running in the Boston Marathon on April 20, 2015. He will be running as a member of team MR8, in honor of 8 year old Martin W. Richard, who was killed in the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, 2013. This 60-member team was chosen from applicants across the country, and Benjamin is the only runner from the Southeastern United States.
Martin was an 8-year-old boy who loved learning, sports and the world around him. He participated in the BAA Children's Relay on Marathon weekend for three consecutive years, was a school "peacemaker," and recognized at a young age that while we are all different, we are all the same. The way Martin saw the world, anything was possible. The Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit, was established by Martin's parents to honor his memory and his message of "No more hurting people. Peace." and is sponsoring Charity Team MR8 in Boston.
Benjamin started running almost 9 years ago, and at the time, he didn't think it would lead to anything. After he completed his first 5k, he was hooked! Since then, he has run in well over 200 races of all distances. This will be his third Boston Marathon. His first two were "incredibly exciting and memorable, but 2015 promises to be the most fulfilling", he states. He says that "Running for Team MR8 in honor of Richard Martin will be a huge thrill, and he is proud to be the only Carolinian on the team!"
Everyone at Martin Starnes & Associates, CPAs, P.A. (MSA) is cheering Benjamin on and proud to support him and his cause!
