The Internal Revenue Service just published its’ “Dirty Dozen” list for 2023. These tax scams happen all year but peak during the filing season.
The list includes possible abuse activities everyone should avoid. Unfortunately, criminals are always trying to steal our money and identity with fake emails, social media posts and unexpected phone calls. A few of these scams are listed below:
- Phishing
- Phone Scams
- Identity Theft
- Return Preparer Fraud
- Inflated Refund Claims
- Falsifying Income to Claim Credits
- Falsely Padding Deductions on Returns
- Fake Charities
- Excessive Claims for Business Credits
- Offshore Tax Avoidance
- Frivolous Tax Arguments
- Abusive Tax Shelters
One important thing to remember is that you are legally responsible for what is on your tax return, even if it is prepared by someone else.
