Form 5500 Filing – Deadline Approaching

If you offer certain retirement plans such as a 401(k), you may need to be aware of the upcoming deadline to file Form 5500. The due date for calendar-year plans is July 31, 2025.

Form 5500 is required for most employer-sponsored retirement plans under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). This form provides key details about your plan’s operations, financial status, and compliance with legal requirements. Failing to file on time can result in costly penalties from the Department of Labor and the IRS.

If you need more time, you may request a deadline extension by filing Form 5558 before July 31. This can give you up to 2½ additional months (October 15, 2025) to complete your Form 5500 filing.

Staying ahead of this deadline helps you avoid penalties and keeps your retirement plan in good standing.
