The North Carolina Department of Revenue has issued a notice about recent changes at the United States Postal Service (USPS) that may affect the postmark date on mailed tax documents and payments.
Under current USPS processing practices, the postmark may reflect the date the mail is processed at a postal facility, not necessarily the date it was placed in a mailbox or dropped off at the post office. As a result, mail sent close to a filing or payment deadline could receive a postmark dated a day or more later.
Because many tax rules rely on the postmark date to determine whether a filing or payment is timely, this delay could potentially lead to penalties or interest.
The Department of Revenue encourages taxpayers to mail documents and payments several days before the due date, consider submitting them electronically when possible, or mailing Certified Return Receipt.
If you have questions about filing deadlines or tax payments, please contact our office.
