U.S. Taxpayers Abroad: June 16th Deadline to File 2024 Tax Returns

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident living or working outside the United States, the deadline to file your federal income tax return for the 2024 tax year is Monday, June 16, 2025. This extension gives qualifying taxpayers two additional months beyond the regular April 15th deadline.

Who Qualifies for the Automatic Extension?

  • U.S. citizens and resident aliens whose primary place of work and residence is outside the United States and Puerto Rico.
  • Members of the military on duty outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Important Reminders:

  • Interest Still Applies: Although the filing deadline is extended, interest will still accrue on any tax payments not made by April 15, 2025.
  • Need More Time? You may request an additional extension to October 15, 2025, by filing Form 4868.
  • Electronic Options Available: Taxpayers can file and pay electronically using IRS Direct Pay or the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS).
  • No Penalty with a Reasonable Cause: If you qualify and file by June 16th, no late-filing penalty will be charged as long as you attach a statement explaining your eligibility.

If you need additional assistance or have questions about filing from abroad, our team is here to help you stay compliant and avoid penalties.
